Kava Not

Hi there…. It’s been a while. Not for any reason, but I’m pretty sure I just got tired of hearing my own voice and couldn’t think of anything new to say. Hannah has been riding me pretty hard about blogging again, so I’m going to give it a try. When I told a close friend that I was thinking about writing again but didn’t know what to write about, she told to me write about whatever was in the front of my mind; so here it goes (whether you are interested or not).

Besides the fantastic return of the television season (we will have to discuss this later and yes, I still don’t care for This Is Us), I am obsessed with the nomination and television coverage of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Before everyone jumps on me as the crazy liberal who doesn’t want Kavanaugh on the Court, let me clarify. I do not think Brett Kavanaugh belongs on the Supreme Court, but probably not for the reasons that you think. Although I despise Donald Trump with every fiber of my being, I actually believe that, under the Constitution, the President has the right to appoint whomever he wants to the Supreme Court (btw Mitch McConnell, Merrick Garland deserved the same courtesy with Scalia’s open seat and I will always be bitter about this outright theft). And, while I am 100% pro-choice and personally despise everything Kavanaugh stands for, I do not believe that we have the right to stop a nomination based on the beliefs (how awful they may be) and/or rulings of the nominee (unless they involve illegality, fraud or other criminal behavior). Elections have consequences and I, for one, took that into great account when voting against Donald Trump in the 2016 election (merely one of a million reasons to support anyone but Trump). Given the ages of the current Justices, its wasn’t a stretch to believe that there would be open vacancies during a Trump presidency. If you voted for Trump, with this knowledge, you are only fooling yourself if you think you care for liberal causes or human rights (and regardless of what you think, keep your cult-like nonsense to yourself).

That being said, I still do not believe that Brett Kavanaugh should be confirmed to the Supreme Court. I base this NOT on his history as a Judge, but on his demeanor, honesty, and professionalism during the confirmation process. I do not know if he is telling the truth about his history with Professor Ford and, quite frankly, I do not care right this second. What we do know is that are THREE women who have made similar abuse allegations about Kavanaugh; that Kavanaugh lied approximately 31 times during last week’s hearings; that, during the hearings, Kavanaugh showed that he is truly biased and partisan (both major, recusal inducing no-no’s on the highest court) and that I do not trust our current Administration or Mitch McConnell to do one thing legally or correctly. Given the allegations against him and the fact that the American Bar Association (amongst others) have pulled their endorsements, it is way past time that Trump nominate someone else to the Court (and don’t even begin to tell me there aren’t numerous other white, entitled men he could choose from).

Truth be told, if we weren’t so close to the midterms, you know damn well that Trump would have dropped Kavanaugh like a hot potato and moved on. But under the circumstances, there isn’t enough time to nominate, vet and vote on someone else (and don’t think the GOP isn’t fully aware of this fact). I would “almost” have more respect for Mitch McConnell, Chuck Grassley, etc., if they would just admit the truth and schedule their vote accordingly (but not Lindsay Graham… I will never respect that spineless weasel).

The entire process is nauseating… a Supreme Court Justice is one of the most honorable, respected and important jobs in the United States. In a perfect world, a Justice should be above reproach, completely honest and a model of legal excellence. Kavanaugh cried and argued with Senators during his job interview; he was snarky and evasive, ill-tempered and partisan. If he behaved that way at an interview for dog-catcher, they would have thrown him out of the room. The American people deserve no less.

As an avid Saturday Night Live fan, I loved the portrayal of Kavanaugh by Matt Damon this past weekend. Besides the brilliant casting (who knew they looked so much alike), Matt Damon used some of Kavanaugh’s own language verbatim in the skit and it was FUNNY. Ironic, as I doubt that Kavanuagh intended to rely upon his “humor” to cement his already dubious nomination.

For the record, I do believe Professor Ford and the other accusers. I have found no reason to disbelieve them and/or any ulterior motive they may have for coming forth. I am absolutely appalled by Trump’s behavior mocking Professor Ford and am more appalled that the GOP Senators don’t seem to give a damn, so long as they fill their holy Supreme Court seat. As a total aside…. who lets a President under investigation for collusion, obstruction and fraud nominate a Justice in the first place?

I didn’t want this to be solely a political blog, but, given the circumstances, I guess that’s what was at the front of my mind. And now, I am going to ask each and every one of you to make sure you are registered to vote! If you don’t like what’s going on in D.C. (and really, unless you are a cold-hearted monster, how could you), you need to get out and VOTE.

I, for one, am tired of old, rich white men telling me what to do. I am tired of watching old, rich white men who lie, cheat and scam the system to get what they want. And, I am tired of old, rich white men blindly supporting other old, rich white men, despite their obvious failings. What do you think? Are you ok with what’s going on?  Are you ok with an alleged sexual abuser on the highest court in the land? To quote Michael Avenatti, whose tenacity I greatly admire, #BASTA (fyi: it means “enough” in Italian).

I don’t just “like” this, I LOVE this. Your assessment of Kavanaugh at the hearings is spot on. You can’t see me, but I’m giving you a standing ovation.

It’s funny that I have recently been looking for your blog as I enjoy how and what you write. Happy to see you picked the topic of most interest to me and I am in complete agreement with what you have written. The only solution is to VOTE. Hopefully, you have motivated more people to do what Americans have the right to do-Vote.
